Why BAARK exists.

Most consumer pet health tests are built on small marker panels, optimised for marketing rather than science. The shotgun metagenomic methods that have transformed human microbiome research over the past decade are well established in research laboratories. They have not, until now, been delivered at consumer scale for dogs and cats in Australia.

BAARK is built on the working principle that the right output is a complete view of the gut and oral community, processed in a Melbourne laboratory to a research-grade specification, framed in language that respects both the science and the regulatory boundary. The report is a wellness profile. It is not a diagnostic test. It is one input into the conversation with your veterinarian, alongside the bloods, the urinalysis, and the clinical examination that the vet relies on.

The work is published openly. Methodology pages, statistical validation tables, and long-form scientific explainers on each clinical axis sit on this site rather than behind a customer account. The intention is that the veterinarian seeing a BAARK report from a client can read the methodology and reference cohort details before deciding what weight to give the findings.

How BAARK works.

You order a kit. We send paired faecal and oral swab collection materials. You collect the samples at home, post them back in the prepaid satchel. The faecal sample is sequenced; the oral swab is run on a targeted PCR panel. Our Melbourne laboratory processes the samples on Oxford Nanopore R10.4.1 with a QIIME2 + EMU + GTDB r214 pipeline. Results return in five to seven business days as a web report covering bacterial community composition, fungal screen, parasite qPCR panel, oral microbiome, and the clinical-axis indicators relevant to your pet's age and species.
